Bay Film, the voice of Tampa indie film
Tampa Film Community
Watch: As
of February 27, 2010, we estimate that the arrival of the first genuine
Tampa Film Community, made up of professional filmmakers, will be established
by 2012. For now, we have a Tampa indie film scene made up of self-serving
cliques, and this is exactly why, in our qualified opinion, that there
has been little progress in the Tampa film scene in the past ten years.
This is also why others tend to humor Tampa filmmakers, and the Tampa
filmmaking scene, and is why, in our qualified opinion, that the Tampa
film commission, and large Tampa film festivals, would rather promote
the Tampa Bay area as a location for large productions. These outside
productions who would be in competition of Tampa filmmakers. The Tampa
film commission, and large Tampa film festivals, would rather promote
Tampa Bay as a location for outside productions than promote Tampa filmmakers,
in our opinion. What makes it worse is that Tampa filmmakers are tricked
into helping projects, which are not in their best interest, or in the
interest of improving the Tampa indie film scene. Those foolish Tampa
filmmakers often help others attract their competition here.
In our opinion, the Tampa indie film scene does not need outside competition
here which will undermine the Tampa film scene. The Tampa film scene needs
to stand on its own, grow, and inspire the respect and the recognition
that it will eventually deserve. The foundation of our first Tampa film
community in the future will help the Tampa film scene tremendously, and
give it the professional leadership that it has always lacked, and desperately
needs.
Welcome to Tampa
Film Community, the future online resource and
professional networking site for the upcoming Tampa Film Community.
Why future, and why not now? Allow us to explain.
Tampa Bay Film bought the Tampa Film Community domain name in the early
morning hours of Thursday, September 3, 2009. At the time of purchase,
there is no professional Tampa indie film community. The domain name was
an investment toward what Tampa Bay Film analysts determined to be a future
market need, and another Tampa indie film-relevant domain name and web
site for its continued dominance of the Tampa indie film scene. At the
same time, Tampa Bay Film invested in Tampa Film Conference, which is
TampaFilmConference.Com, a future Tampa Bay Film filmmaking conference
event series for the upcoming Tampa film community.
There
is no Tampa Film Community - yet.
Allow us to explain why; we
will be as brief as possible.
For many years, there has been a Tampa indie film clique of insecure,
and unprofessional, amateur filmmakers masquerading as a “Tampa
film community”. This small group of filmmakers, which frequented
the now-defunct monthly film festival known as The Tampa Film
Review, has self-serving motives which were quite different
from what they publically portrayed and advertised. They were hypocrites,
and the Tampa film scene did not go very far over the five years that
The Tampa Film Review ran. In our opinion,
nothing changed at all.
Forget what the write up in the papers said. There is no “before
TFR” and “after TFR”. Since The Tampa Film
Review, also known as the TFR, did not accomplish anything,
it may as well have never existed to begin with. During the run of The
Tampa Film Review, most Tampa filmmakers tolerated its shortcomings
and repeated mistakes, often as result of the half-hearted efforts of
the organizers, because it was the only game in town. Many Tampa filmmakers
simply quit going. Most of us, also, are now glad that the fiasco is over.
If it’s worth doing, it is worth doing well, and the TFR, in our
opinion, was never more than a half-ass effort by organizers who should
have never dared to attempt event planning or running any film festival.
Yes, they may be good filmmakers, but film festival organizers they never
were.
In 2005, C. A. Passinault, an entertainment producer and the creator of
industry changing web sites such as Independent Modeling, tried to get
involved with the so-called Tampa film community. Within a year, he learned
about the deception of the Tampa film clique, which was a film community
in name only, firsthand. Some of the members researched him and freely
stole his ideas and web site design concepts. Others spread rumors about
him to others. A few even openly slandered him, accusing him of things
which he was innocent of.
Passinault was unaware of this for quite some time. He helped with some
film projects, referring lead actors and talent to the their films from
his vast professional contacts. It wasn’t until he dared to question
the leader of the Tampa film clique about selling out Tampa filmmakers,
did the leader slip up, and the truth became known.
Is it a film community when the members act like a gang and work to slander
and undermine anyone who they see as competition? Not at all. Such a group
is a clique, and they are the reason, in our qualified opinion, that the
Tampa indie film scene is not respected, and has not succeeded, to date.
Many rolled over from their attacks and left, discouraged from helping
the Tampa film scene progress. Passinault, however, was a different story.
He was better, and smarter, than they were. He did not back down, and
stood up to them. He also began to fight back, and began the fight to
inspire the change, and the progress, which was needed in the Tampa indie
film scene.
Passinault was stunned by the slanderous, unprofessional behavior toward
him. Was this a professional film community, or was it high school? At
any rate, the clique soon found out that among all of the people who they
attacked, Passinault was the last person that they should have messed
with. It is speculated that some in the clique saw Passinault as a threat
because of his talent scam-fighting efforts on the Internet, and that
their attempt to undermine him was an attempt to destroy his credibility
so that he would have a more difficult time addressing their schemes when
the truth became known. Regardless, they failed, and their attacks backfired.
Passinault quickly realized that infrastructure was needed to support
progress in Tampa indie film. It would be up to him and his allies to
set up a foundation.
Wanting to establish a dominant, professional voice for the Tampa film
scene, as well as an online film festival which would serve as an alternative
to the problems that plagued the TFR, Passinault and his team launched
Tampa Bay Film on January 11, 2007.
Passinault realized, though his past successes in inspiring change in
the modeling industry, that the process of improving the Tampa indie film
scene would take a lot of time and hard work. His fight was going to take
years.
Of course, things would get worse before they would get better.
Tampa Bay Film and its online film festival quickly dominated the Tampa
film scene. After a series of online arguments with the clique, who was
jealous of the success of Tampa Bay Film, a Tampa indie film war began
in December of 2007. It raged for a year, and in that year, Tampa Bay
Film increased its dominance, the online film festival became more effective,
and the Tampa film clique lost a lot of ground. The main casualty, of
course, was the demise of The Tampa Film Review,
as the organizers threw in the towel and simply gave up. Many people in
the Tampa indie film scene have expressed that they believe that The
Tampa Film Review failed and shut down because of the efforts
of Passinault and Tampa Bay Film.
The Tampa film war came to a close in early 2009. The clique was scattered,
and the dust began to settle. As Passinault would state from his growing
fleet of Tampa film-relevant web sites, “We pave the
way with conflict. We conquer, however, with peace”.
In 2009, Tampa Bay Film, the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival, and
the other Tampa Bay Film sites reigned unchallenged, and unquestionably
dominant. The Tampa film clique was defeated, and the foundation that
would be needed for the future of the Tampa indie film scene was finally
formed.
The work, however, was only beginning. The process would take years.
As of now, September 3, 2009, there really is no Tampa film community.
There will be one, however, in the next few years. Until then, you can
consider Tampa Bay Film and the Tampa Bay Film site network to be a Tampa
film community. Progress is finally being made!
YOUR
CURRENT "VIRTUAL" TAMPA FILM COMMUNITY
As of September 3, 2009, phase
one of the Tampa Bay Film online investment strategy is complete, with
all 8 required domain names procured. This armada of Tampa indie film-relevant
web sites will maintain the dominance of the voice of Tampa Bay Film and
our affiliates in the Tampa indie film scene, giving us leverage in the
future of Tampa filmmaking. Those domain names are as follows:
TAMPA
BAY FILM - TAMPA
ONLINE FILM FESTIVAL - TAMPA
FILM BLOG - TAMPA
FILM SHOWCASE - TAMPA
FILM FESTIVALS - TAMPA
FILM REVIEW - TAMPA
FILM CONFERENCE - TAMPA
FILM COMMUNITY
Tampa
Bay Film
TampaBayFilm.Com
The core web site, Tampa Bay Film launched in January 11, 2007, and quickly
grew to be the dominant online presence of the Tampa indie film scene.
Tampa Bay Film is the leading Tampa indie film site, and it is the voice
of Tampa indie film.
Tampa Bay Film features articles and tutorials about Tampa indie film
and the indie film industry, indie film scam fighting resources, Tampa
film festival coverage and reviews, indie film reviews, Tampa film festivals,
an online film festival, Tampa indie film interviews, Tampa indie film
news, and much more.
Tampa Bay Film is the primary web site for the Tampa Bay Film online network
detailed here. All of the sites can be accessed from Tampa Bay Film, using
the menu on the right side of the screen. The site menus for each site
and their content, however, are on the left menu.
Tampa
Bay Film Online Film Festival
TampaOnlineFilmFestival.Com
The Tampa film festival that’s always open, and available wherever
you happen to be. No lines, no tickets, no parking, and no politics. Just
quick, cool indie films, 24/7.
This began as an online film festival built into the Tampa Bay Film web
site. It became very popular, and by 2008 was a Tampa film festival with
“attendance” and film viewing numbers greater than all of
the Tampa film festival events combined. On October 10, 2008, the Tampa
Bay Film Online Film Festival was overhauled and set up as a stand-alone
web site. The new online film festival site was interconnected with Tampa
Bay Film, so branding and advertising could be done through TampaBayFilm.Com,
and the marketing was backwards-compatible with the earliest marketing
efforts. The transition was invisible to most of the visitors of Tampa
Bay Film, and the newest version of the online film festival enjoyed the
full traffic of the old online film festival on day one. This proved to
be an advantage, as the performance of the new site dramatically increased
over the old one. As of September, 2009, the “attendance”
and indie film viewing numbers are over ten times that of the old online
film festival, and continuing to grow.
Although the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival emphasizes Tampa indie
films, there are a lot of indie films from national and international
filmmakers playing on the film festival. The reason? To inspire Tampa
filmmakers on what is possible here in Tampa Bay, and to provide a selection
of indie films to view when Tampa indie films are not available.
An advanced version of the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival is now
in development. The new online film festival will be entirely database
driven, and once that version replaces the current online film festival,
the growth and “audience” of the film festival will expand
geometrically. A related online film festival, an online film festival
for a worldwide audience, is also planned for the future. Both online
film festivals will be maintained by Tampa Bay Film, and it is planned
that Tampa Bay Film will help to create a Tampa indie film scene which
will inspire the world.
Currently, however, the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival is the premier
marketing platform for indie films in the Tampa indie film market, with
better exposure for Tampa indie films than all of the Tampa film festival
events combined.
Tampa
Film Blog
TampaFilmBlog.Com
Both highly controversial and insightful, the Tampa Film Blog started
out as the “opinion” section on Tampa Bay Film. The Tampa
Film Blog launched on February 28, 2008, and posted its first post on
March 2, 2008. It is now hundreds of pages long, is the most widely read
blog for Tampa indie film, and is the place where anyone can but through
the politics and the B.S. to find out what’s really going on in
the Tampa indie film scene.
Tampa Bay Film director C. A. Passinault is currently the only poster
on the Tampa Film Blog. Currently, other Tampa filmmakers are welcome
to publish posts, too.
Tampa
Film Review
TampaFilmReview.Com
The Tampa Film Review web site was commissioned on December 15, 2008.
It is a film review index site for Tampa Bay Film, with references to
the reviews of Tampa inde films, Tampa film festivals, Tampa events, and
more.
The Tampa Film Review site was recently upgraded to a full Raptor Class
site to match the continuity and overall design of parent site Tampa Bay
Film. This will aid in navigation between sites. The Tampa Film Review
will also become a main web site for the Tampa Bay Film Review
underground film festival series. It will also reference other Tampa film
festival information on Tampa Bay Film and Tampa Film Festivals.
The Tampa Film Review site should not be confused with The Tampa Film
Review, a failed monthly Tampa film festival series that ended in January
of 2009. They are not affiliated, or related.
Tampa
Film Showcase
TampaFilmShowcase.Com
Set to debut in January 2012, the Tampa Film Showcase monthly film festival
and professional networking event series will be the main “workhorse”
Tampa film festival for Tampa Bay Film. It will serve as a monthly film
festival and networking meetup, and will lead into the other Tampa Bay
Film film festival properties and underground film festivals.
The Tampa Film Showcase is the backbone of all of the Tampa Bay Film film
festivals.
Tampa Bay Film is currently working on over four Tampa film festival properties
(not including the online film festival) and at least three underground
film festival properties. The Tampa Film Showcase is the only one with
its own stand-alone web site (again, not counting the online film festival).
All the other Tampa Bay Film film festivals will be marketed through,
and have their sites hosted on, TampaFilmFestivals.Com .
Tampa
Film Festivals
TampaFilmFestivals.Com
The Tampa Film Festivals web site is an important one for Tampa Bay Film,
as it will be the primary (and for most, the only) web site for all of
the Tampa Bay Film film festival properties. For both operating and marketing
purposes, this makes it a prime web site.
Tampa Film Festivals will use tactics developed for other online marketing
web site concepts over the years, to help visitors shuffle through the
array of film festivals, and easily navigate to what they are looking
for.
Although the Tampa Film Showcase has its own stand-alone marketing web
site, Tampa Film Festivals will market it like the other film festival
properties. The same for the online film festival. Tampa Film Festivals
will interconnect with Tampa Bay Film, the Tampa Bay Film Online Film
Festival, The Tampa Film Blog, and the other Tampa Bay Film Tampa indie
film web sites.
Another function of the Tampa Film Festivals web site will to serve as
a resource for other Tampa film festivals. It will reference film festival
coverage, reviews, and information on other Tampa Bay Film sites.
Tampa
Film Conference
TampaFilmConference.Com
This is a classified (still secret) Tampa indie film event concept by
Tampa Bay Film, and its goal is to help, and inspire, Tampa filmmakers.
We obviously need to establish a professional Tampa Film Community before
we can go ahead with the Tampa Film Conference.
Tampa Bay Film director C. A. Passinault was hesitant about buying this
domain name now, several years before the estimated 2013 debut of this
event. He didn’t want to tip his hand or give out any information
too early about what was being planned; he didn't even want to disclose
the name of the event, initially, because it would reveal his long-term
plans.
It was decided, ultimately, to obtain the domain name now, and to keep
the information limited. The details are a closely guarded secret at this
time.
Tampa
Film Community
TampaFilmCommunity.Com
This is the site that you are now on! We'll be adding more content to
the site in the coming months. Obviously, there isn’t a Tampa film
community established right now, and we’ve proven it.
We suppose that you could count the network of Tampa Bay Film Tampa indie
film-relevant web sites as the prelude for the formation of the first
Tampa film community. We’ve created a strong foundation for what
is to come. The rest is up to all of us, and, yes, this may include you.
There is a possibility that
more domain names and web sites could be added to the Tampa Bay Film Site
Network in the future, but phase two of the Tampa Bay Film online strategy,
which is being implemented as of September 2009, does not require it.
What are we up to now? You’ll find out soon enough!
